Striped Ties

The striped tie used to be a membership card: English regiments and clubs wore their colours as stripes, identification rather than decoration. Then Brooks Brothers reversed the stripe direction in America, and uniform became wardrobe. That history sits in every striped tie to this day, which is why they never feel arbitrary.
